Biohazard Transportation
When these materials are transported, Department of
Transportation (DOT) Hazardous Materials Regulations may apply and are
extremely complex in nature. Biohazard Transportation Laboratory personnel must properly package,
transport, and handle any Infectious substances which are used in their
research Labeling using the universal biohazard symbol is also required for any
infectious biological materials in order to prevent accidental exposure to
unsuspecting personnel who may be exposed to the biological material (e.g.,
couriers, administrative staff, and janitors). The HMR apply to any material
that DOT determines capable of posing an unreasonable risk to health, safety,
and property when transported in commerce1, including infectious substances. An
infectious substance must conform to all applicable HMR requirements when
offered for transportation or transported by air, highway, rail, or water.
Hazardous waste transporters are individuals or entities that move hazardous
waste from one site to another by highway, rail, water, or air. Hazardous waste
transporters play an integral role in the hazardous waste management system by
delivering hazardous waste from its point of generation to ultimate
destination. This includes transporting hazardous waste from a generator's site
to a facility that can recycle, treat, store or dispose of the waste. It can
also include transporting treated hazardous waste to a site for further
treatment or disposal. Biohazard waste is waste that is contaminated with blood
or other infectious materials. The infectious materials pose a risk of
spreading disease in humans, animals and the environment. Biohazard waste is
typically treated in an autoclave process which renders the waste harmless and
then it is disposed of. Medical waste
can be very confusing, what federal laws apply? What are my local State, City.
