What is medical waste? Medical waste is defined as:
potentially infectious waste materials generated at health care facilities,
such as hospitals, clinics, physician’s offices, dental practices, blood banks,
and veterinary hospitals/clinics, as well as medical research facilities and
laboratories. Medical Waste Disposal Service The Medical
Waste tracking Act of 1988 defines medical waste as “any solid waste that is
generated in the diagnosis, treatment, or immunization of human beings or
animals, in research pertaining thereto, or in the production or testing of
biologicals.” Biomedical waste (BMW) is
any waste produced during the diagnosis, treatment, or immunization of human or
animal research activities pertaining thereto or in the production or testing
of biological or in health camps. It follows the cradle to grave approach which
is characterization, quantification, segregation, storage, transport, and
treatment of BMW. Medical waste is any waste that is generated as a by-product
of healthcare work at doctor’s surgeries, dentists, hospitals and laboratories.
It includes any material that could come into contact with the body during
diagnosis, research, drug administration or any type of treatment. It’s likely
to be infectious, or potentially infectious, and is often contaminated with bodily
fluids in some way – but the term can also be used to refer to general waste
from any medical practice, as well as specific waste streams typically found in
the medical industry.
