Biohazard Transportation
Waste material is stored in a range of containers from yellow biohazard
bags to 800 litre bins.Once safety transported to our base in Dunedin, waste
material is segregated, sterilised, shredded and deep buried in a sanitary
landfill. Biohazard Transportation Disposal is regulated and controlled by
local regional councils and the national Resource Management Act in order to
ensure environmentally safe procedures are consistently followed. Biological
materials are classified as infectious substances biological products,
genetically modified organisms, or medical/clinical waste for the purposes of
shipping. The shipment of certain genetically modified organisms is also
regulated. Sharps must be placed in rigid, leak- and puncture-resistant
containers secured tightly. All other waste should be stored and maintained in
a rigid or semi-rigid leak-proof container. Biohazard waste is any type of
waste that can contain elements that can be infectious or potentially
infectious to humans, animals, the community or the environment. Hospitals are
the largest generators of biohazard waste and are responsible dental, pharmacy,
home healthcare, veterinarians, funeral homes, coroners, research laboratories,
and physician’s offices. There are local, state, and federal guidelines designed
for the handling, labeling, storage, transportation, and ultimate rendering of
the waste as harmless for safe disposal.
